SPEEDO SPONSORS CLIMATE CHANGE EXPEDITION
Lewis Pugh, swimmer and adventurer, dares to go where no person has gone before… all in the name of climate change.
The symbolic expedition is estimated to take about two weeks, during which he will keep a blog and be accompanied by a film crew. He wants to alert people to the fact that the Arctic ice is melting faster than predicted by scientific models. He also wants to send a message of peace by placing 192 flags from every nation onto the North Pole to highlight that the territory is internationally neutral and that climate change is therefore a responsibility shared by all 6.6 billion people of the world.
Pugh’s achievements include being the only swimmer to have completed long distance swims in every ocean in the world, and pioneering more swims around famous landmarks than any other swimmer in history.
Swimming in his Speedos in all corners of the globe has given Pugh a unique first hand insight into climate change. He has witnessed retreating glaciers, severe droughts, coral bleaching, and the migration of animals to colder climates.
SPEEDO SUPPORTING A GREAT CAUSE
World Swim Against Malaria 2008
Speedo supports the World Swim Against Malaria Foundation and on the 5th of April 2008 we again took part in the global swim to raise money and awareness for this cause. The effort is not over yet though, so we encourage you look further into this and perhaps you too can help.
The facts are:
- 1- 2.7 million people die of malaria each year.
- 70% of the deaths are children under 5. That is 1 child every 30 seconds.
Alek Wek for World Swim Against Malaria ‘We believe everyone should be able to enjoy the water, for safety, health and fun. Swimming can provide an accessible and fun way to raise money to help fight Malaria. Speedo supports WSAM because 100% of all money raised goes to saving lives.’
In 2008 we will play our part and globally engage as many people as possible to get involved and raise as much money as possible. You can do this one of two ways;
(1) Swim Around the World Challenge
You can join us in our Swim Around the World Challenge! Speedo staff, friends and family will be swimming regularly, logging metres online, in an attempt to swim the distance around the world – 40,074 kms!
Buy a bed net to register and start swimming!
(2) One Million People Swimming
On the 5th April 2008, in association with World Swim Against Malaria’s aim to have 1 million people around the world swimming on one day, Speedo has also organised events around the World, including a high profile swim event, with several UK celebreties, at the 9th FINA World Swimming Championships in Manchester, UK.
To take things further in 2008 we have also produced a product range where the profits will contribute to buying bednets and the fight against malaria. Please take a look at our World Swim Against Malaria range for your opportunity to further support this important cause.
For each purchase from the World Swim Against Malaria range, Speedo will make a monetary contribution to continue to buy more bed nets.
100% of money raised by World Swim Against Malaria goes to buying mosquito nets. 20 nets save 1 life and 1 net costs $5 so every $100 raised saves a life.
