Aquabumps x Speedo: A story of origin, roots & a genuine love of the sun, surf and sand

We are proud to say this is our 7th year working collaboratively with Aquabumps and iconic photographer Eugene Tan on the Aquabumps High Summer 17/18 swimwear collection.

What a lot of people don’t know is that Speedo and Aquabumps share an iconic birthplace, Bondi Beach, so our partnership is one of many synergies and under-pinned with a genuine love for the ocean and our beaches. We are proud to see this resonate in the collection, as it embodies the spirit of modern-day beach culture and celebrates all that we love about summer – sun, surf, sand and more time at the beach.

Eugene Tan, otherwise known as “Uge”, has been shooting the ocean since he was nine, and surfing for over 25 years. This season, his award-winning surf photography has been overlaid with bold retro stripes and applied to high leg one piece swimsuits, bikinis and an athletic white paddle suit for women and board shorts for men.

Aquabumps is Uge’s daily documentary of Bondi Beach and sometimes other incredible beaches from Australia or from his travels around the globe. His photos are shot, collated into a daily email to our 270,000 people around the world, including social channels. The iconic images can also be found at the Aquabumps gallery in Bondi Beach and in his two current books The Beach Blog and The Bondi Book.

Eugene TAN says, “We’re proud to be rolling out our Aquabumps range of boardies and bikinis with Speedo once again”.

“Every year I feel like the collection gets better – this year taking Uge’s iconic ‘Colours of Bondi’ Image as the main creative inspiration for the women’s collection and a range of his images from Hamilton Island and Sydney coastlines for the men’s” –Said Deb Tan, Uge’s wife and Aquabumps commercial director, in her Behind the Scenes: Aquabumps x Speedo Campaign Blog edition.

Designed locally in our Sydney based head office, the design team led by Tahnee McIlwraith, has worked collaboratively with Debbie and Uge on all of silhouettes and print designs, excelling on the new range with a focus on Fine Art meets Swim; with cuts, fabrics and styles that stand up in the surf and in modern fashion cultures for both the guys and the girls.

“The cuts and fabrics are beautiful to wear whether you surf swim or just swan by a pool – Uge and I are always the first to trial them – we even jumped in for a little behind the scenes this year to prove it. Not models!!” – Deb Tan

The women’s swimsuit fabric is eco-friendly, made from reclaimed and recycled plastic water bottles that would otherwise go to landfill. The water bottles are broken down, reconstituted and eventually spun into the Speedo ECO Fabric which is soft and durable, and highly chlorine resistant, making it perfect for swimwear. AND making it easy to look and feel great in the Aquabumps range for all the right reasons.

The Men’s board shorts are also chlorine resistant, and are stretch woven for comfort and flexibility. They carry a classic fixed waist board short style making them perfect for everything streetwear to surf.
