The Importance of Teaching Kids to Swim with Speedo
At Speedo, we're proud to be part of the journey of teaching kids to swim safely and with confidence.

Australia's stunning coastline stretches over 30,000 km, with an additional 17,000 km of coastline surrounding its offshore islands. It's no surprise that Australians have a deep connection to the water, with water-based activities being integral to their lifestyle. Swimming, in particular, is the most popular sport across the country, topping the Australian Sport's Commission's latest national AusPlay data as the number one participation sport. From leisurely beach days to vibrant surfing culture, water is woven into the fabric of Australian life. This deep affinity for the water means that for many Australians, swimming is not just a pastime - it’s an essential life skill.
Across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand shares a similar bond with the water, boasting over 15,000 km of coastline and a rich culture of aquatic recreation. Swimming is also one of the most popular activities in New Zealand, with an emphasis on water safety taught from a young age.
However, water safety is critical, especially for young children in both countries. In Australia, drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for kids under the age of five, with home swimming pools being the most common location. Tragically, the same issue is mirrored in New Zealand, where drowning is also a significant concern for children. In fact, New Zealand has one of the highest child drowning rates in the developed world. This stark reality makes it even more important for children to learn how to swim at an early age. By teaching them the skills to stay safe in the water, we are not just helping them have fun - we are equipping them with the tools they need to protect themselves in and around water.
The Benefits of Learning to Swim Early
Beyond water safety, research has shown that children who learn to swim early develop more advanced physical and cognitive abilities. Swimming helps kids build strength, coordination, and confidence - all skills that can carry over into over areas of life. The physical exercise involved in swimming also promotes brain development and helps children learn important motor skills.
Safety and Confidence in the Water
At Speedo, we know how important water safety is, and we're committed to providing high-quality products that help children feel confident and secure in the water. Kristen's Review: A Parent's Peace of Mind
To showcase the benefits of our Learn to Swim products, we sent out a kit to influencer @kristen_in_bloom, who tried out our Float Vest, Float Suit, and Neoprene Suit with her son Wren, aged 2. Here's what she had to say:
- Neoprene Suit: Kristen's favourite was this suit, saying, "They fit so well and feel like it gives him warmth in the water too", helping him feel comfortable to jump on in and give it a go.
- Float Vest: Kristen mentioned that it did take "Wren some time to get used to", but she appreciated the peace of mind it gave her, knowing that Wren was safe even if he was slightly out of reach. "It made me feel he was secure around the water", she said. This size was a little to big for him but Kristen said it was perfect for him to grow in to and for Wren to continue to wear as he progresses in the water.
- Float Suit: Kristen also loved the float suit, saying it was "colourful, and he could always be seen in the water". The bright design made it easy for her to keep track of Wren at all times.
More Than Just a Brand - A Core Memory
When most people think of 'Speedo', they remember their first swimming carnival, the family photos of their child's first swim, or the thrill of diving into the pool and going full Speedo. It's not just a brand - it's part of the lasting memories made in the water.
For parents like Kristen, Speedo products represent more than just practical swimming aids; they're a trusted part of her family's water experience, ensuring Wren's safety while he learns to love the water as much as his parents do.
At Speedo, we're proud to be part of the journey of teaching kids to swim safely and with confidence. Whether your child is just starting to dip their toes in or they're ready to dive into the deep end, from starting in floaties to wearing your first gold medal - Speedo is here to help them make memories that will last a lifetime.
